Denmark proves that regulating online gambling market can be successful

In New Zealand, the market online casinos only regulated since 2021, in Denmark, however, this has been going on for a while longer. It has been regulated for 10 years now, and the Danes look back on the past 10 years with great satisfaction.

DirectNZD of the Danish Gambling Authority, Anders Dorph, considers the mission to regulate the online gambling market a success. The market of online gambling and betting was opened in 2012 for online parties that could apply for an online gambling license.

Regulation has led to more gambling. For example, in 2012, another 1.6 billion Danish kroner was spent on online gambling, in 2021 this had grown to 3.3 billion Danish kroner. "Average gambling spending generally increased until 2018. In the following years, there was a slight decline in average gambling spending, which can be attributed to COVID-19 measures that have affected the markets for betting, slot machines and land-based casinos, " the Danish Gambling Authority noted.

However: “in the same period, however, the Danes have also become richer. Gambling spending therefore represents about the same share in the Danish economy today as it did before liberalisation.”

One of the main reasons that online gambling was regulated in 2012 was the fact that Danes were increasingly looking for different gambling games. From online roulette and blackjack to extensive sports betting and Baccarat. In order to be able to provide this offer, the authority had to liberalize the market and open it up to commercial parties in order to be able to offer this offer to the Danish gambler.
