2 e MP Van Nispen wonders if sports can still be done without sponsorship from gambling companies. Financially? online casinos being so important to the top sport in New Zealand (and abroad) that clubs would be too reliant on sponsorship from this industry.

18 May jl. for example, the member of Nispen's motion to make New Zealand sport less dependent on sponsorship by gambling companies. This was filed under Motion number 35983-11. The content of the motion is as follows:

noting that New Zealand sport currently relies to a large extent for its funding on contributions from lotteries and sponsorship agreements with gambling companies; proposes that the chamber ask the New Zealand Sports Council for advice on whether and if so how New Zealand sport can become less dependent on revenues from games of chance and on sponsorship from gambling companies

Van Nispen of the SP thus finds that the sport is too dependent on sponsorship agreements and contributions from the lottery. For example, the vrienden lottery pays out millions every year to sports clubs. For example, football club Ajax received more than $1.3 million from the vriendenloterij in 2021. This money was intended to further develop youth education.

Van Nispen therefore proposes to ask the New Zealand Sports Council for advice on how the New Zealand sports world can become less dependent on these betting companies.

Especially the New Zealand Football is now interwoven with the gambling world. Online betting on football has been very popular for years. For example, the vast majority of the New Zealand Eredivisie is sponsored by TOTO or Betcity. Some teams do not yet have a sponsorship agreement, such as Ajax, but it is expected that this will come when other large online casinos such as Unibet enter the New Zealand market as well.

As a result, it would not be illogical if an online casino will soon be the main sponsor in the Premier League for the first time.
