Sweden has dropped plans to re - set a deposit limit for online casino games s.This deposit limit was introduced in 2023 because the government was afraid that more people would start gambling online due to the corona lockdown. This limit was set at $470 but expired last november. Therefore, there was a proposal on the table to set a limit again. This limit would be even lower than the $470 that first applied. There was also a restriction on Sign-up bonuses. These were limited so that casinos could not seduce people too much
Now that the infections are on the rise again, there were again noises that the government wanted to reintroduce this measure. However, there were criticisms of this plan from the online casinos that operated in Sweden. Criticism also came from the Swedish gambling authority. They were not opposed but felt that such a measure must first be proven to be truly effective.
The Swedish government has finally decided not to reintroduce these measures. Gustaf Hoffstedt, Secretary General of the casino industry association welcomes the decision. “The government has made a wise and balanced decision, partly based on the general development of the pandemic; Partly and mainly because precisely these restrictions would not achieve their goal of protecting public health.
“We are in favour of strong regulation of the gaming market and the prerequisite for this is that the intention of various reforms is also expected to have the intended effect. That was not the case with Covid restrictions, and it is therefore welcome for them to be withdrawn.”
Earlier this week, the Swedish government supported the Social Security minister's proposal for new measures for safer gambling and consumer protection , including new restrictions on advertising and measures against unlicensed online casinos.
